The Game Awards is an annual awards ceremony which honours achievements in the video game industry and features premiers of new games.
This year’s event took place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday December 6th and announced the winners of 30 categories and some exciting developments in the industry. Here’s what we are most thrilled about.
Winners in Top Categories
- Game of the Year: God of War
- Best Role Playing Game: Monster Hunter: World
- Best Mobile Game: Florence
- Best Ongoing Game: Fortnite
- Best Strategy Game: Into the Breach
- Best eSports Game: Overwatch
- Content Creator of the Year: Ninja
- Industry Icon Award: Greg Thomas
Atlas
In what was likely the biggest reveal of the event, the creators of Ark: Survival Evolved announced Atlas.
Said to be 1,200 times bigger than Ark: SE, the colossal open-world survival MMO features pirate ships, fantasy monster galore, and knights on horseback. Studio Wildcard has even boasted that a single world can have 40,000 players in it!
The Outer Worlds
Obsidian Entertainment, who are considered masters of the RPG, announced The Outer Worlds which may remind some of Borderlands or Fallout.
With a sci-fi aesthetic set in a displaced era, The Outer Worlds is being published by Take-Two’s Private Division.
Persona 5 Character Joins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Even though Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was set for launch on 7th December, we thought we had heard everything worth noting.
However, Nintendo had a surprise up their sleeve – which was almost as thrilling as bingo Canada – when they announced that the Joker from the PlayStation-only Persona franchise game Persona 5 would be joining the line-up of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Mortal Kombat 11
It’s been 5 long years since the release of Mortal Kombat X and a sequel announcement of this magnitude turns a surprise into a blindsiding blow.
The founder of NetherRealm Ed Boon took the stage to present the award for Best Sports/Racing Game which became a trailer interruption for Mortal Kombat 11.
Fortunately fans won’t have long to wait considering it will be released on 23rd April 2019 to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
This announcement was one of the biggest surprises of the 2018 Game Awards for a few reasons.
Firstly, the new Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order resurrects a franchise which hasn’t seen the light of day in 10 years and secondly, it’s a Nintendo Switch exclusive.
Coming next year from the makers of Nioh and Ninja Garden, Team Ninja, this announcement had Marvel and Nintendo fans jumping around in their seats.
Far Cry: New Dawn
While Far Cry: New Dawn is best described as Ubisoft’s worst kept secret, the trailer confirmed what many already expected: the spin-off will take place in the post-apocalyptic ruins of Montana which were obliterated at the end of Far Cry 5 earlier this year.
Nevertheless, this hotly anticipated game will hit PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 15th February 2019. Clearly there is much to look forward to in the gaming world in 2019!
