PlayStation in 2019 is Going to be Massive

2019 is set to be a massive year for Sony’s PlayStation brand, much to the delight of PS4 console owners.

So what exactly do the more than 91 million PS4 console owners have to look forward to this year? Here are a few of the most anticipated highlights slated to unfold in the coming months.

New PlayStation Console Release Announcement

Sony executives put rumours to rest as early as May 2018, when they openly discussed working on the development and design of the new console. As yet,  there is very little information as to what new features the console will boast, but PlayStation’s decision to give this year’s E3 a miss suggests that Sony will stage its own event to independently announce the release of its next console. Going off what PlayStation head, John Kodera, stated in May of last year, PlayStation gamers can expect the latest version of the console to be released in 2021.

Major Changes on the Cards for PlayStation Plus

Before you get too excited, it appears that the biggest changes to PlayStation Plus are not all positive. As of March 2019, PS Plus will drop its monthly selection of PS3 and PS Vita games.

This will surely be a huge sticking point for PlayStation Plus members and it’s unclear how PlayStation intend to deal with the perceived loss of value in its service that many of its users will likely experience.

On a more positive note, users will finally be given the ability to change their PlayStation Network name. While it might seem like an insignificant development, it is something the PlayStation community has been requesting for years.

Known for their infamously stubborn stance on cross-play functionality, Sony made an important step forward late last year by making a Fortnite beta available to its users. For the first time, users were allowed to play the hugely popular PVP battle royale game alongside Xbox One players.

It’s worth mentioning that no update has been released on the progress of those tests and they’ve been tight-lipped on whether other games will be added to the program.

PlayStation 4 Exclusive: Death Stranding

Death Stranding has got to be one of the most highly anticipated PS4 exclusive game releases of the year. Funded by Sony, the game is being created by the legendary Hideo Kojima, the creative genius behind the hugely popular Metal Gear series.

PS4 gamers are in store for a cinematic treat as Death Stranding is a creative collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Academy Award winning director, Guillermo del Toro.

The game’s main character is played by Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame and features Mads Mikkelsen, best known for his starring role in the thriller-horror TV series, Hannibal.

Most Anticipated Sequel: The Last of Us: Part II

When the Last of Us was released in 2013 it smashed the status quo in terms of what gamers could expect from a video game. Genre-pushing, cinematically arresting and visually stunning, the game went on to become the fourth-best-selling PlayStation 3 game.

Its highly anticipated sequel is slated to be released in 2019, although there is no confirmed release date.
